Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake is a must!  It's been 7 hours since we got back and I'm still excited about it.  If you kayak-fish and you live near Lexington, KY....there's no good reason to pass it up.  Directions.

For starters, Beaver Lake is the perfect size for paddling.  After taking an overnight trip out to Land Between the Lakes, it was so nice to be on a smaller lake that still provided lots of inlets to explore.
Second, there's a limit on the size of boats that are allowed out on the water.  That keeps the boat traffic down and the water calm.  Camping is available right on the water so it was a perfect overnight trip to fish the prime times of evening and morning and be back home by lunch!  But most importantly, there's some big fish in there!

Ryan, Zach and I left straight from work on Friday.  We were excited!  Got to the marina. Checked in and reserved a camping spot.  On the water as fast as possible.  It was smokin hot in the low 90's.  The water felt like bath water.  We tried fishing deep with crank baits, but didn't have much luck.

It got dark and we slowly made our way back to camp fishing by headlamps.  Then Ryan caught this monster! (see below)  He didn't have a headlamp so he reeled it in and had to wait until we paddled over to see how big he was.  A beauty!!!!

The magic lure was a small crank bait like this one to the left- the most effective having a really dark green on the top and light bottom.  We caught all our fish on them.  After catching about 12 on the magic lure, Ryan sunk the little soldier to honor it's many victories.  Actually, it got caught in a root below the water and didn't want to come out.

We tried our hand at fishing for catfish from about 12am-1am.  No bites.  Woke up with the sun on Saturday morning.  Some granola bars and Via coffee and we were back in our boats.  Via is awesome for camping!

I finally started getting some action along the shore line as the morning went on.  Caught 2.  2 got off.  Enough to get me excited and keep me interested.  Ryan kept bringing them in, but Zach didn't have any luck at all.  We were pulling for him, but it wasn't his day.
A great experience!  Great friends!  So glad to be able to start my weekend this way!
