Abrams Creek

This weekend I tried a new place by driving down to Abrams Creek just outside GSMNP.  Boris met me at my house at 7am and we were in the water by 8:15.  That included a few stops to pick up sunscreen and Gatorade.  We didn't need the sunscreen.  The weather was perfect.  We did drink the Gatorade.

There was parking off to the side of the road on the bridge where Abrams Creek flows into Chilhowee Lake.  That made for easy parking and access to the water.

The weather was perfect!  Absolutely perfect.  The water was calm and clear.  You can see downed trees from a tornado that came up into the creek in April of 2011.

Reached the end of what we could paddle.  From this point on, the creek was only hikeable.  But, this was the perfect place to land smallmouth.  Caught one and Boris and I each hooked another.

We hiked a little beyond our kayaks up into the creek experimenting with some small jigs to see if we could get a trout.  No luck.  We did hook a smallie on a little yellow jig, but he spit the hook.

I got what I came for!

Boris redeemed himself after losing a few dandies by landing this largemouth, the largest catch of the day!

In all, we caught about 6 largemouth - including one on Boris's first cast and one standing from the shore waiting for Boris to arrive as we were getting ready to leave.  We also caught 2 smallmouth, but hooked several more that were fun to fight...just couldn't get them in the boat.  We spent nearly 10 hours on the water today and loved every minute of it!
