Not as planned...but still awesome.

Last night was my first try at bike camping.  We set out from Lexington to hit the trails at Cave Run Lake.  The trail we intended to ride was Clear Creek Campground to KY1274 on the Sheltowee.

The trail began with a pretty difficult climb.  We couldn't ride it, especially with our camping gear so we walked most of the way.  By the time we reached the top, we were excited to begin riding along the ridge.  Unfortunately, only a couple minutes in my rear derailleur broke.  Derrick was a good friend and bike expert.  But, it was busted up pretty good...

We decided to camp for the night and found a place shielded by the wind.  There was a ton of really dry wood that we used to make a great fire.  We felt a little snow off and on that looked like dip 'n dots.  We fell asleep only a few feet away from the fire.  It was awesome!

Derrick let me borrow his 15 degree bag and I'm so glad he did! Temp overnight was 30 degrees!
Staring up the trees and watching the wind blow them was pretty incredible.  I cooked up a few packages of oatmeal, brewed some VIA, packed up camp and we were on our way.

The trip back was short and since I didn't have any tension on my chain, the downhill terrain was perfect.  Downhill, dodging roots and rocks and navigating switchbacks was really really fun!

This was a great trip and I'd love to go back when I get a new derailleur and travel the complete trail!
